  • what you want to do more of in the coming weeks

This week we accomplished finalizing the 5K event and putting on the event! It was great and everyone had a good job. The T-shirt distribution went smoothly and over all there were not problems with the race it was a huge success!!!! There is nothing I wish I wouldve been able to do i think it all went smoothly and I had stuff I enjoyed doing each day! I can't say there were any complications maybe just that I wanted to volunteer with the 5K as well as run it which couldn't have been done! I have no more weeks so nothing! This was fun!

Day 15

Its my last day of senior project! Instead of doing a regular morning workout I decided that today my workout would be to bike to school with Stef! The bike from Stef's house to school is about 7 and a half miles. My bike had two flat tires so it took us quite a while to get to school. At halfway we switched bikes and then ended up pushing them until we got to school. It took us a solid two hours and even though we pushed our bikes most of the way it was still a good workout and a great way to start off our day.
We got to school just in time for lunch. We sat and ate then went our separate ways. I went to the trainers at 1 and stayed until 3 with Hazel and Beau working on our final poster board to present in the wise on Wednesday! We spent a while cutting, pasting and deciding what we are going to do and say during our presentation. We decided on doing some live wrapping and taping so be sure to come check it out!!!!

Day 14

Today I woke  up at 10 to go do my second to last workout of my senior project. I've enjoyed being able to incorporate working out into my senior project because I can always learn more about it and it always puts me into a great mood, it's just an awesome way to start my day. Hazel and I went to the trainer right after lunch and began helping make the final bags for the 5K for race day. We have to separate and fold the T-shirts then cut the names out and put them in order than put and pamphlet, race shirt and running bib into each bag with he correct size of the runner. It feels good that our last goal of our senior project is now underway of being completed and will be a go on saturday! I can't wait to see how the race turns out and to run in it as well!!!

Day 13

Today was supposed to be game day but we did not have a game but did have a team hike at 12 so I could not stay in the trainers long. I got to school and realized that Kelly had to go to a CPR teaching so now senior project today so instead Beau and I helped Trish and Jill pick stuff up and clear out the gym for senior dinner. YAY

Day 12

Today I came to campus at 10 and went for a run, did my warm up and then went into the training room and did my mixed volt workout. I finished in time to make it to Kelly's gender studies class at 11:55. During gender studies we watched a movie about how girls and boys are supposed to be portrayed when they are growing up or else they will be made fun of. The movie lasted about an hour till we then headed to lunch. We sat in the training room before heading to the dinning hall where I worked on blogs and my paper then we went to lunch with a mission of signing more people up for the 5K then returned and learned how to use splints and then filled up the waters for practices.

Day 11

Today I woke up for a run and got to campus around 11 just in time for a department meeting. In the meeting we listened to everyone talk about what their plans were for the end of the school year leading into the next year. We learned how much planning goes into preparation for the upcoming fall, for example that concussion testing happens in the spring and fitting for football also happens in the spring to get ready for the fall term. After department meetings we gathered in the training room and got papers ready to bring to lunch to get more people to sign up for the 5K. At the end of lunch we managed to get around 15 people signed up, things are looking great for the 5K this Saturday! After lunch we went back to the training room and I helped kelly organize the 5K papers by alphabetical order, fill up water jugs and dry out ice coolers. When this was done I spent time putting together my hours and found out that I am already pretty much done with my hours! Yay!!!

  • what you have accomplished

  • whether there were complications you didn't anticipate
  • what you want to do more of in the coming weeks

This week I accomplished getting in a solid workout each day that I put together to keep myself in shape in the off season but including weights and running. I also was able to get down a good stretching/warm up routine before lifting and running. I wish that I was able to spend more time doing the workouts I put together instead of spending more time putting them together. The only complications I came about were that I knew I had to leave for hockey and would be gone for two crucial days to get in hours, but I think I will be able to make those hours up and I will be fine in the next week. In the coming week I wish to just workout more as well as get to working on any last things I would like to know about athletic training so I can incorporate those into my paper and my poster board to present to the faculty.

Day 10

Today was a very short day for me because I was leaving at 10:30 for a hockey tournament. I woke up at 8:30 and got to school by 9:00 for a short workout to make sure I was at least getting in an hour today. I worked out from 9:00-10:00 then was on my way to Bedford, MA to play some hockey.

Day 9

Today I started my day with a workout. Since I am ending my sports today I had a high intensity workout that included a warm up that I will use all the time now over the summer before my runs. After my warm up I went on a long run than went to the weight room where I put together different individual exercises from my favorite volt workouts for the off season. I now have a workout that I will feel comfortable doing over the summer to keep myself in shape, which was my second goal of my senior project.
After lunch I went to the training room where Beau, Hazel and I were taught about concussions.
(Kelly with her book of the brain!)
First kelly taught us about the different symptoms that people would have if they were concussed then she showed up a baseline concussion test and the different scores that you get when you are concussed. She also showed us physical things that you can perform on the person you think has a concussion. She demonstrated this on Beau which was very entertaining to watch Beau follow kelly's finger and try to perfect all the different small activities. After this we just looked at pictures of the brain and where different sense and things come into play and how they can be altered or damaged from getting a concussion. Before we knew it 3 o'clock came around and we were all off to practice after getting the waters ready.

Day 8

Today I had my AP Lang exam so I was not able to do much at all for my senior project. I finished my exam just in time for lunch around 11. After lunch I reported to the training room where I helped get things ready for the game that were happening on campus and I stayed in the trainers for a couple hours until I had to leave to get ready for my own game. Today was not a very exciting day at all but not much I can do when I have testing and a game! :(

Day 7

Today I arrived at school early and go in my two hour workout from 8:30-10:30. I worked in the weight room starting with a lift then ending with stretches to help loosen the muscles in my back and the moved into exercises that would help strengthen my core so the pain would be taken off of my back because my stomach is growing stronger. I find it very fun to put together an ab workout that works different parts of my stomach as well as working my shoulder and back muscles. I have had back problems for over a year now and I find that doing these exercises and the more physically fit I am in general helps to relieve that stress and pain that my back is going through.
I stopped by to spend time with my advisory where Kate Jones told me about a great invention her cousin has been working on. The product helps to incorporate music with movement by making a sound/note when you are doing a movement and if you do it wrong it makes a broken note so you know that whatever you did was not done correct. I was very interested in this and she offered to talk to her cousin and maybe find a way that I can get involved and work this into my senior project when I near the end. Who knows! It sounds sweet though!
After stopping in with the Jones I went to Kelly's gender studies class and then was off to lunch where I spent that hour and a half trying to get more people to sign up for the 5K....today was my least successful day of sign ups....
Day 6

Today was game day for me so instead on an intense morning workout I went for a nice jog and spent a good amount of time doing stretches and other exercises to warm my muscles for my afternoon activity. By the end of the week I am hoping to have a good off season work out and to also find some good stretches and strengthening exercises to help with my back problems so when I return to sports I wont have to worry about my back getting in the way or my workouts.
At 11 Hazel, Beau and I went to a department meeting we were got to see the planning that goes behind all the athletic events at Proctor. We learned about plans for next year and this years faculty end of year themed party, and a lot more stuff but those were by far the most interesting to hear about.
After the meeting we were set off until one when we met back in the trainers to fill up waters and work independently on whatever we wanted to go more in depth on this week. Since I had a game I left around 3 to get ready to verse Tilton. After my game I did not have time to stop back in the training room so I will have to make up that half hour lost either tomorrow or the day after.

Weekly Bog

  • what you have accomplished
  • what you wished you had been able to do
  • whether there were complications you didn't anticipate
  • what you want to do more of in the coming weeks

During this week I have accomplished an idea about what and athletic trainers day looks like as well as had the chance to learn basic wrapping skills, CPR and first aid. I would say that I feel comfortable being put in a situation where I need to perform basic first aid and/or wrapping of someones wrist or ankle for practices/games.
I wish that I had been able to actually help someone who needed athletic assistance more than just putting a bandaid on them.
There were no complications everything ran pretty smoothly and I was able to fit in a ton of hours without messing up me schedule at all. Within the coming weeks I wish to work with the athletic trainers to convert my workout plan into a structured and beneficial plan that I can follow over the summer in the off season to help prevent injuries when I jump into my season in the late fall.

Day 5

Today I started my day off much like the other days with a nice run followed by a workout. After my workout I headed to the training room before lunch to work on my weekly blog. We all headed to lunch only to return an hour later. Once back in the training room we had extra time to learn how to wrap more. Kelly taught us how to wrap an achilles and we were able to practice on the people that were wondering around the training room. Much like the first time i taped an ankle I had a very hard time but then was able to catch on. We then were taught how to wrap a wrist and ace wrap someones shoulder. We finished taping and the filled up the waters for practices and were off to our own practices.
After practice I sat with Kelly and watched the boys lacrosse game. When the game was finished my job was to go over to the visiting boys teams bench and ask everyone if they needed any ice. I was VERY nervous because I had never wrapped ice on anyone before and there were A LOT of people who needed ice. Luckily only one person wanted theirs wrapped on and the rest just wanted a bag to carry and use on their own. When everyone cleared off the fields Kelly and I went around collecting water jugs, bringing them back to the trainers and drying them out. I got my most hours today and now with the week coming to an end I have a good understanding of what the day of an athletic trainer looks like!

Day 4

My day started with a nice long rail trail run followed by a workout. After two hours of running and working out it was time to move into lunch where Beau, Hazel and I had a competition to see who could get the most people to sign up for the 5K run/walk event that Proctor is holding. We walked around lunch for about an hour and found that most everyone had already signed up but we got a good amount of people to sign up to help with water stations and found around 15-16 people who hadn't signed up yet. Over all it was successful and the 5K is looking to be great event!

After lunch Hazel, Beau and I met back in the training room and talked more about what we want to focus on with athletic training. After we discussed for a bit we moved back into taping and wrapping.
(getting my ankle taped...right before i cut off all my anklets by accident:(((()

(What we have been working with)

We have yet to master taping an ankle so after practicing that for a bit we decided to learn how to wrap a shoulder properly. I had my shoulder wrapped a couple times then wrapped others.

A lot of our time was taken up by the 5K signing up process so before I knew it I was off to practice.
After practice I popped back into the training room to head off with Chris to pick up the waters from the fields and dry them out before I was officially done for the day.

Day 3

Today was a very short day since it was game day. We arrived at the training room at 10:30 and filled up all the water jugs to put on the fields. The big water jugs needed 4 1/2 scoops of ice and the little ones needed 3 1/2 scoops, then both were filled almost to the brim and sent out to the field on the kabota. Next we filled small coolers with ice and put in 7 ice bags and a thing to wrap the ice bags on with. Once that was complete and everything was where it needed to be we were done. Before we left for lunch we had an ankle taping contest. We were all given 2 minutes to wrap Kelly's ankle and the one who finished in time with the best tape job won. Its safe to say that yes we all finished in 2 minutes but none of the tape jobs were all that functional.

We headed to lunch and then were off our separate ways for our games. Short by productive day.

DAY 2

I started my morning off with a two hour time slot for working out. Hazel, Stef and I went on a nice long rail trail run then returned and did an ab workout. From the workout we went to Kelly's gender studies class where we watched a movie about the roles girls play in different cultures around the work. The workout and class took up all the time until lunch. DIrectly after lunch Hazel, Beau and I reported to the training room where we met with Kelly and went over our first day, what we were going to accomplish today and what we wanted to accomplish this week.
For the rest of this week we are sticking with learning the basics of athletic training. Having already covered basic first aid and CPR we moved into learning how to treat sports injuries. We started with one of the most basic and common wraps, the ankle wrap.
(Kelly teaching on Beau's ankle)
Kelly demonstrated on Beau going through the process step by step. She showed us the materials we needed (lace/heel pads, pre-wrap and medical tape). Once we knew what we needed and how to use them Hazel and I gave it a shot.
(Finished product of Hazel and my work)
It was a lot harder than it looked and even though my end product was not that pretty I still was able to learn the motions and the steps to wrap an ankle. Once I was done on Beau's ankle I tried once more on Hazel's and was able to do a better job (still not very pretty). Throughout the week my main goal is to learn other basics of athletic training and hopefully do better than I did today.
We ended our day by meeting with Kelly after sports and picking up the water jugs off the sports fields, drying them out and putting away the kabota. Once again we had a busy day and I am looking forward to tomorrow!

Day One.

Today I began my day around eleven. Both Kelly and Chris's group of seniors met in the athletic function room to go over the importance of first aid safety and learn HIPA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability act). I learned about how important it is while dealing with a patient that you wear the correct protective wear to make sure you do not get any of their bodily fluids on you. We watched a short video on the different diseases that are transmitted through bodily fluids than traveled into the training room where we were taught the correct way to dispose of gloves without putting ourselves at risk of coming in contact with any fluids. Everyone did a great job and we were able to run through it quickly. After throwing out our gloves we played around with a practice Epipen then were off to lunch.
Once having ate lunch we moved back into the function room where Kelly taught the eight of us CPR, so we could get CPR certified. We first started with just listening to what Kelly had to teach us then moved onto trying to do compressions on the dumbies.
(The dumbies we practiced on)
We were taught to do 30 reps then move onto doing two breathes of mouth to mouth then move back into the 30 reps. Once having done this on an adult dumby we moved through the different age dumbys. With an adult dumby we were taught to clench both of out hands together and push straight armed on the bottom of the breast bone, on the kid we were taught to use one arm and the baby only needed us to use two fingers.
We were put to the test when we had to perform CPR with our partner on the dumbys while our partner ran and got the to place the pads on the body and allow them to receive a shock before returning to the compressions and mouth breathes.
(Alicia giving the patient a shock!)
Everyone did a great job and we able to finish for each size dumby.
Lastly we were taught how to do the hemlock and how to save a baby from chocking. We did not practice on the dumbies for the hemlock but practiced helping clear a babies throat by putting two fingers on either side of the infants mouth and giving five whacks to its back. Once having learned these last steps we were all set to head off to our sports now all being CPR certified! A successful first day!
