Day One.
Today I began my day around eleven. Both Kelly and Chris's group of seniors met in the athletic function room to go over the importance of first aid safety and learn HIPA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability act). I learned about how important it is while dealing with a patient that you wear the correct protective wear to make sure you do not get any of their bodily fluids on you. We watched a short video on the different diseases that are transmitted through bodily fluids than traveled into the training room where we were taught the correct way to dispose of gloves without putting ourselves at risk of coming in contact with any fluids. Everyone did a great job and we were able to run through it quickly. After throwing out our gloves we played around with a practice Epipen then were off to lunch.
Once having ate lunch we moved back into the function room where Kelly taught the eight of us CPR, so we could get CPR certified. We first started with just listening to what Kelly had to teach us then moved onto trying to do compressions on the dumbies.
(The dumbies we practiced on)
We were taught to do 30 reps then move onto doing two breathes of mouth to mouth then move back into the 30 reps. Once having done this on an adult dumby we moved through the different age dumbys. With an adult dumby we were taught to clench both of out hands together and push straight armed on the bottom of the breast bone, on the kid we were taught to use one arm and the baby only needed us to use two fingers.
We were put to the test when we had to perform CPR with our partner on the dumbys while our partner ran and got the to place the pads on the body and allow them to receive a shock before returning to the compressions and mouth breathes.
(Alicia giving the patient a shock!)
Everyone did a great job and we able to finish for each size dumby.
Lastly we were taught how to do the hemlock and how to save a baby from chocking. We did not practice on the dumbies for the hemlock but practiced helping clear a babies throat by putting two fingers on either side of the infants mouth and giving five whacks to its back. Once having learned these last steps we were all set to head off to our sports now all being CPR certified! A successful first day!
